Dr. Lucy Russell and Dr. Fiona Gatty are hosting at Christ Church on Winckelmann  as part of theEuropean celebration of Winckelmann’s jubilee. It also coincides with the opening of the ‘Winckelmann and curiosity in the eighteenth-century gentleman’s library’ exhibition at Christ Church Library.

‘Change of Air: Atmosphere, Health, and Locality in the Romantic Era, 1760-1840’

University of Oxford, Radcliffe Humanities Building, 3rd Floor Seminar Room.
 
The pursuit of a ‘change of air’, and its supposed effects on mental and physical health, is one of the most recognisable forms of environmental awareness in the long eighteenth century. However, it has yet to be fully incorporated into our understanding of place and locality in Romantic-era culture. This interdisciplinary symposium, organised in association with the Oxford Environmental Humanities research network, will demonstrate how air’s significance as a medical and environmental influence can take us beyond M. H. Abrams’ influential concept of the Romantic ‘Correspondent Breeze’, exploring how atmosphere was also an important medium of local, regional, and national difference.
 
Confirmed Speakers include: Rowan Boyson (KCL) [Keynote], Harriet Guest (York), Tim Fulford (DMU), Mary-Ann Constantine (University of Wales), Jennifer Wallis (QMUL), and William Tullett (IHR).

This presentation focusses on the distinctive pair of Bb clarinets by George Miller in the Bate Collection, which also appear in Johan Joseph Zoffany’s oil-on-canvas entitled The Sharp Family, on display in the Museum.

These clarinets provide a lens through which to explore aspects of late 18th-century life including English clarinet design, Miller’s career, and the popularity of the five-keyed clarinet. Dr Pearson will also discuss Zoffany’s oeuvre amidst his current reputation for naturalistic portrayals of his subjects’ lives and the unfavourable contemporary reception of The Sharp Family, and the wider scene of music-making in late 18th-century London, particularly amongst the aristocracy.

The talk will be accompanied by performances of music of the period on the Miller clarinets and other instruments.
